History
The Republic of Ireland (commenly shortened to Ireland) was originally a part of the United Kingdom until the Anglo-Irish Treaty in 1922 following the Irish War of Independence and became the Irish Free State, a Dominion of the British Empire like Australia. It was comprised of 32 counties during it's infancy, before 6 Unionist/Protestant-majority counties opted to rejoin the UK under the name Northern Ireland, with Belfast as their capital, while the remaining 26 separatist/Catholic-majority counties became the independent sovereign state the Republic of Ireland, keeping their capital at Dublin. Over the course of history, the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland have had many conflicts. The most famous conflict was a terrorist civil war known as the Troubles which lasted from the late 1960s to the late 1990's. The Troubles ended in 1998 on Good Friday, a holiday that commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.
